Mi Band 2 Tracker’s Accolade for Good Design, Light Weight and Long Battery Life

By Dennis Kithinji

Xiaomi, the manufacturers of the ever popular Mi band 2 and an array of other tech gadgets are taking the world by storm. In 2015,  the company took on the global giants by introducing a fitness tracker (Mi Band 1) to compete with the likes of Fit bit and Apple.

The fascinating thing, however, was the price. At 30$ or approximately 3,000 Kes, the price was quite unimaginable bordering on ridiculous. Most people thought that this was just another Cheap Chinese gadget meant to appeal to low-income earners particularly in Asia but they were in for a rude shock. This gadget could do at least 70% of what other big name gadgets were capable of doing but at a very affordable price. The company went ahead and introduced mi band 1s(also known as pulse), where they incorporated a heart rate sensor. This gadget didn’t do as well as people expected and most people complained of the dysfunctional heart rate monitor as well as the reduced battery time from 30 days to around 20 days. The other big disadvantage for the 2 versions compared to the more ‘advanced ‘ trackers was the lack of an LCD screen. This forced the Chinese giants to go back to the drawing board and work on a few flaws associated with the first 2 mi bands. They did exactly that and came up with Mi band 2.This tracker has received the global accolade for the good design, light weight, long battery life(an average tracker lasts 5 days while

There are still issues especially with the heart rate monitor but the good thing is that Xiaomi has acknowledged the problem and they are constantly updating their App to improve on this function. The other notable shortcoming is the inability to track multi-sports like swimming, basketball etc. This is a function that is available in most high-end trackers. Xiaomi has however taken up the challenge and recently there has been an attempt by the company to introduce

Fitness trackers are becoming a norm these days especially in the western world where many companies have introduced fitness trackers to the global market. Some of the most popular trackers are; Fit bit, Garmin, Nike, Polar, Moov, Samsung, Misfit, Withings among many others. The jury is out on whether they are worth the investment, but one thing that is certain though; Trackers give extra motivation to fitness enthusiasts due to the well-analyzed data that they provide to the user. They are also becoming a fashion statement given the nice designs and colored flaps that most manufacturers make as part of the accessories. The new generation of trackers will enable someone to pay at points of sales using the NFC technology. Judging by this it is quite evident that it’s just the beginning and things are only going to get better.
